Art.

I hope you’ve gathered from this site that I enjoy writing. Broader than that, though, anything creative excites me.

When my wife and I were getting ready to move in together, we wanted to buy a piece of art. Something that wasn’t hers or mine, but something that was ours.

As former punk rockers, we knew we wanted something totally badass, but we couldn’t find anything we loved that was in our price range.

When I was younger, I used to mess around in the art studio, but never really took it seriously. One night about 3 months before she moved in, I had an epiphany. I could make something better than anything we’d seen. (Or as good, at least.)

Long-story-short, after months of planning, testing, and crafting, I created this piece and had it waiting for Jami the day she arrived.

Death to Advertising: “New Avalanche” – Brian Kantor (2018)

“New Avalanche” is a painted black skull over a mashup of advertisements from Esquire and ELLE.

My simultaneous frustration with and love for the industry as a whole catalyzed and inspired this piece. I strived for tension with the decoupage and release with the skull and the violent lines that strike it.

At some point, I’d love to expand the series to explore more areas of tension and release. We’ll see if I ever get around to it.

Whether you’re obsessed or find it meh, I must say, that it does fit nicely into our living room.
